    Magnetism of two-dimensional defects in Pd: stacking faults, twin boundaries and surfaces

    Careful first-principles density functional calculations reveal the importance of hexagonal versus cubic stacking of closed packed planes of Pd as far as local magnetic properties are concerned. We find that, contrary to the stable face centered cubic phase, which is paramagnetic, the hexagonal close-packed phase of Pd is ferromagnetic with a magnetic moment of 0.35 μB\mu_{B}/atom. Our results show that two-dimensional defects with local hcp stacking, like twin boundaries and stacking faults, in the otherwise fcc Pd structure, increase the magnetic susceptibility. The (111) surface also increases the magnetic susceptibility and it becomes ferromagnetic in combination with an individual stacking fault or twin boundary close to it. On the contrary, we find that the (100) surface decreases the tendency to ferromagnetism. The results are consistent with the magnetic moment recently observed in small Pd nanoparticles, with a large surface area and a high concentration of two-dimensional stacking defects.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure

    Predicting calyceal access for percutaneous nephrolithotomy with computed tomography multiplanar reconstruction

    OBJECTIVES: Objective parameters in computed tomography (CT) scans that could predict calyceal access during percutaneous nephrolithotomy have not been evaluated. These parameters could improve access planning for percutaneous nephrolithotomy. We aimed to determine which parameters extracted from a preoperative multiplanar reconstructed CT could predict renal calyceal access during a percutaneous nephrolithotomy. METHODS: From January 2009 through April 2011, 230 patients underwent 284 percutaneous nephrolithotomies at our institution. Sixteen patients presented with complete staghorn calculi, and 11 patients (13 renal units) were analyzed. Five parameters were extracted from a preoperative reconstructed CT and compared with the surgical results of percutaneous nephrolithotomy. RESULTS: Fifty-eight calyces were studied, with an average of 4.4 calyces per procedure. A rigid nephroscope was used to access a particular calyx, and a univariate analysis showed that the entrance calyx had a smaller length (2.7 vs. 3.98 cm, p = 0.018).     Standardization of blood smears prepared in transparent acetate : an alternative method for the microscopic diagnosis of malaria

    Background: Due to students’ initial inexperience, slides are frequently broken and blood smears are damaged in microscopy training, leading to the need for their constant replacement. To minimize this problem a method of preparing blood smears on transparent acetate sheets was developed with the goal of implementing appropriate and more readily available teaching resources for the microscopic diagnosis of malaria. Methods: Acetate sheets derived from polyester were used to standardize the preparation and staining of thin and thick blood smears on transparent acetate sheets. Thick and thin blood smears were also prepared using the conventional method on glass slides. The staining was conducted using Giemsa staining for the thick and thin smears. Results: Microscopic examination (1,000x) of the thin and thick blood smears prepared on transparent acetate produced high-quality images for both the parasites and the blood cells. The smears showed up on a clear background and with minimal dye precipitation. It was possible to clearly identify the main morphological characteristics of Plasmodium, neutrophils and platelets. After 12 months of storage, there was no change in image quality or evidence of fungal colonization. Conclusion: Preparation of thin and thick blood smears in transparent acetate for the microscopic diagnosis of malaria does not compromise the morphological and staining characteristics of the parasites or blood cells. It is reasonable to predict the applicability of transparent acetate in relevant situations such as the training of qualified professionals for the microscopic diagnosis of malaria and the preparation of positive specimens for competency assessment (quality control) of professionals and services involved in the diagnosis of malaria

However, little is known about the pathophysiological alterations of corpus cavernosum in sickle cell disease. Objective Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the functional and molecular alterations of sympathetic machinery and nitric oxide-cyclic guanosine monophosphate signaling pathway in Townes transgenic sickle cell disease mice. Methods Concentration-response curves to contractile (phenylephrine) and relaxant agents (acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside) were obtained in corpus cavernosum strips from sickle and C57BL/6 (control) mice. Neurogenic contractions and nitrergic relaxations were obtained using electrical-field stimulation. Measurements of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) and a alpha(1A)-, alpha(1B)-and alpha(1D)-adrenoceptor mRNA expressions and reactive-oxygen species were performed. Tyrosine hydroxylase phosphorylated at Ser-31 and total tyrosine hydroxylase protein expressions in cavernosal tissues were also measured. Results The neurogenic contractions were higher in the sickle cell disease group, in association with elevated tyrosine hydroxylase phosphorylated at Ser-31 and total tyrosine hydroxylase protein expression, as well as increased tyrosine hydroxylase mRNA expression. Likewise, phenylephrine-induced contractions were greater in the sickle mice, whereas a alpha(1A)-, alpha(1B)-and alpha(1D)-adrenoceptor mRNA expression remained unchanged. Cavernosal relaxations to acetylcholine, sodium nitroprusside and EFS were higher in sickle mice, accompanied by decreased eNOS and nNOS, along with lower PDE5 mRNA expression. An increase of about 40% in reactive-oxygen species generation in corpus cavernosum from sickle mice was also detected. Conclusion Our study shows that decreased nitric oxide bioavailability in erectile tissue due to increased oxidative stress leads to both sympathetic hyperactivity and dysregulation of nitric oxide signaling in corpus cavernosum from Townes sickle mice.Sickle cell disease patients display priapism that may progress to erectile dysfunction.     People detection in nuclear plants by video processing for safety purpose

    This work describes the development of a surveillance system for safety purposes in nuclear plants. The final objective is to track people online in videos, in order to estimate the dose received by personnel, during the execution of working tasks in nuclear plants. The estimation will be based on their tracked positions and on dose rate mapping in a real nuclear plant at Instituto de Engenharia Nuclear, Argonauta nuclear research reactor. Cameras have been installed within Argonauta’s room, supplying the data needed. Both video processing and statistical signal processing techniques may be used for detection, segmentation and tracking people in video. This first paper reports people segmentation in video using background subtraction, by two different approaches, namely frame differences, and blind signal separation based on the independent component analysis method. Results are commented, along with perspectives for further work

    This study evaluated in vitro production of sclerotia of Sclerotium rolfsii and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in different culture media, temperatures, and light conditions. This kind of standardization is necessary for the production of pure inoculum, that could be used for tests of pathogenicity and plant resistance to diseases. These experiments were conducted under standard laboratory conditions in a completely randomized experimental design. The results of the trials showed that S. rolfsii produced more sclerotia on PDA (potato-dextrose-agar) at 27ºC under 24 h of fluorescent white-light. However, S. sclerotiorum produced more sclerotia on PDA at 21ºC independent of light condition (light or darkness). PEGA (peptona, yeast extract, glucose, agar), NA (nutrient agar), and FA (potato starch, dextrose, agar) media did not induce any production of a significant amount of sclerotia.Neste estudo avaliou-se as condições ideais para a produção in vitro de inóculo de Sclerotium rolfsii e Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Quantificou-se, em placas de petri com meio de cultura artificial, a produção de esclerócios destes fungos sob diferentes regimes de temperatura, luminosidade e meios de cultura. Esta padronização é necessária quando se deseja produzir inóculo puro e em quantidade elevada, para testes de patogenicidade e de resistência de plantas à doenças. Os experimentos foram conduzidos sob condições controladas de laboratório em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Nos testes executados verificou-se que S. rolfsii desenvolveu-se melhor e produziu mais esclerócios em meio BDA (batata, dextrose, ágar) tradicional, a 27ºC e com 24 h de luz branca fluorescente. Todavia, S. sclerotiorum produziu mais esclerócios em BDA, a 21ºC com ou sem luz. Os meios PEGA (peptona, extrato de levedura, glucose e ágar), NA (nutriente ágar) e FA (fécula ou amido de batata, glucose e ágar) não induziram uma formação significativa de esclerócios
